Bake! – Kyra’s Hot Milk Sponge Cake

The 11th recipe I made from Nick Malgieri’s “Bake!” was Kyra’s Hot Milk Sponge Cake. I know, this recipe hasn’t been on the official lineup yet, but let me explain what happened. Continue reading

Birthday Cakes Part 8: Parrot Cake

It was my oldest daugther’s birthday recently and when I asked her which cake she wanted me to bake she immediately said “A parrot cake!”. When I talked about her decision with my twitter pals I realized that at least in the U.S. parrot cake is totally unknown. Here, it is a VERY common birthday cake for kids and its name (in German: Papageienkuchen) derives from the fact that this cake is as colorful as a parrot. Continue reading >>>

The Modern Baker Challenge – Chocolate Raspberry Almond Tart

When my friend Sara made the Chocolate Orange Hazelnut Tart from “The Modern Baker” by Nick Malgieri she said it was one of the most delicious things she has ever made. Of course, I had to try the recipe, too – it was my birthday last month, after all. Continue reading >>

The Daring Bakers’ Challenges 07/10: Swiss Swirl Ice Cream Cake

You can find the challenge recipe here. Continue reading >>

Birthday Cakes Part 7: Monkey and (Almost Vegan) Butterfly

So, a couple of days ago my youngest one turned 3. I can’t believe how time flies – it seems like yesterday that I held her in my arms or pushed the stroller so she could fall asleep, and now she is THREE! I can’t believe it. It makes me feel kind of old that I have 3 kids of whom the youngest one is 3 already. Anyway, little Missy asked me for a nice surprise birthday cake and thanks to Sara of “Three Clever Sisters” I had the perfect base to start from: 61 Incredible Birthday Cake Ideas. I decided to go for the Monkey Cake for her actual birthday party at home and the Butterfly Cake for her birthday party at the daycare facility. Continue reading >>

Birthday Cakes Part 6: Princess Castle

It was my daughter’s 7th birthday this weekend and when I asked her what kind of cake she wanted for her birthday she said “A pink princess cake”. You have to know that my oldest daughter is not really a pink, ballet kinda, girly girl. She likes soccer, and dinosaurs, and knights… She’s a tomboy. So I was kind of irritated when she told me what she wanted. But as I am a good mom 😉 I accepted this challenge: to make a pink princess cake that is not too pink, nor too girly, but still pink and has a princess. Continue reading >>

Birthday Cakes Part 5: Knight’s Castle

This is the cake I made for my son’s 4th birthday party at his daycare. Everybody was thrilled!
